Our Institute Made Important Achievements in Ultraviolet Single Photon Imaging System Research

Date: Jul 09, 2009

Zhang Xinghua(Ph.D), Zhao Baosheng (Academic Advisor) and other researchers of the State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics have made important achievement in ultraviolet single photon imaging system research. The research group acquired counting images of ultraviolet single photons by making use of the built ultraviolet single photon imaging system, made tests on the system’s resolution and met desired effects.

The research is formally published in Acta Phisica Sinica titled Study of ultraviolet single photon imaging system. The paper detailedly introduces such information as the structure, working principle and spatial resolution of the ultraviolet single photon imaging system. Upon publication, the paper has been paid great attention from experts and scholars of relative fields. Some experts claimed that this detector and relative techniques will have great application essentials in many footprint research fields and will promote relative research in faint luminescence.

Detecting/imaging technique of the extremely faint objects is a brand-new research field of the contemporary world. With the development of the biological medicine, space exploration and environmental radiation detecting techniques, higher standards in faint luminescence detection are required. Since images of extremely faint objects cannot be acquired through traditional cameras and conventional detection techniques; especially when light weakened to a single photon is transmitted, conventional faint light imaging apparatus cannot meet the technical needs. Consequently, single photon imaging/detecting techniques have become a research hotspot of contemporary international science world.

The research group of ultraviolet single photon imaging system of Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of CAS, overcoming great difficulties in the past three years, using gated microchannel plate and special-structure WSA anodes collector, successfully realized single photon imaging/detecting through relative electronic reading system, and successfully developed an extreme ultraviolet imaging/detecting sample prototype with exclusive intellectual property rights, and made great achievements in acquiring images of simulating space extremely faint ultraviolet objects. Recently, such media as People has made special report on this research development.
