Phasic Achievements Made in R&D of Double-Femto All-Polarization Maintaining Fiber Optical Frequency Comb (OFC) System

Recently, State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics, Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM) completed development of experimental principle prototype of “femto fiber optical frequency comb light source”, a sub-project under the national special project of development of major scientific instrument from the Ministry of Science & Technology, and delivered the prototype to relevant user, marking the project has shifted from prototype R&D to engineering application.  

The sub-project “femto fiber optical frequency comb light source” was established in Jan. 2012. Since then, the R&D team, in more than two years’ hard works, has experienced the process from scheme demonstration, validation of experimental principle to R&D of principle prototype, tackled many key technologies and finally developed the double-femto all-polarization maintaining fiber optical frequency comb system, with main technological innovation and performance characteristics of: 1. Difference between repetition frequency of femto optical frequency comb single-set system and that of double-set system adjustable; 2. Combination of coarse adjustment active tracing and fine adjustment frequency locking adopted, guaranteeing long-time and wide-range service of the system; 3. Frequency-phase linkage of double-femto all-polarization maintaining fiber optical frequency comb firstly realized; 4. All-polarization maintaining fiber solution adopted, realizing generation, amplification and compression and frequency/phase stabilization of femto fiber laser and guaranteeing system stability and reliability, with system frequency stability of 1×10-12@1s and phase stability of 5×10-10@1s. Invention patent for relevant technologies has been filed.  

Successful development of the system marks a new step of XIOPM in femto optical frequency comb technology and application, and lays solid theoretical and technological foundations for development in microwave photonics of XIOPM.
