XIOPM Successfully Developed High-Speed Medical Optic Coherence Tomograph

Date: Sep 25, 2012

Recently, XIOPM successfully developed the high-speed medical optic coherence tomograp (OTC). It could get living sectional image of human retina with high speed and no damage. Its resolution rate is 10 times higher than the existing ophthalmic ultrasound imaging and can restructure 3D eye ground structure chart. All these advantages provide convenience for the early and accurate diagnosis of diseases.

OCT is a kind of living things imaging technology with high resolution. When light is reflected by tissues with different density after comes into an organism, it interferes the light and demodulate the signal to get the image. The OCT examine process needs no extra developer and it is free from radiation, damage and has high resolution and safety level. In terms of clinical ophthalmology, it is mainly applied to the diagnosis of diseases related to the macular area and optic nerve, especially for the AMD, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and fundus lesion with high myopia, it has functions that CT or ultrasound can never replace. It is commonly known as ophthalmology CT.

OCT system, combining optical interference, weak signal detection, dispersion compensation, image processing and other technologies, is a typical interdiscipline and systems engineering, especially the high-speed spectral signal demodulation module of which decides the imaging speed and image SNR of the whole system. The research group of XIOPM improved the optical and hardware design of every link and made the line scanning reach 50000 times per second without affecting image SNR. It exceeds the highest speed of the similar high-end ophthalmology OCT of foreign countries and establishes the foundation for realizing hardware’s speedy 3D scanning.

In the aspect of back-end data processing, the existing overseas products mostly use circuit or CPU method to realize parallel data processing with long life cycle and low cost performance. The group figured out another way to upgrade the computation speed for more than 100 times by comparing and using CUP computing solution and realize 3D fast imaging of ophthalmic photography by cooperating with the existing high-speed scan hardware.

With the device, doctors can scan the 3D sectional image of human retina within one second through simple operation, based on which the doctor could carry out digital analysis of patient’s optic disk, macula lutea and other parameters and give a more accurate diagnosis.
