Introduction to Lecturer:
Professor Zhang Jian
(University of Technology, Sydney)
Prof. Jian Zhang is currently an Associate Professor in Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). He was a Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales. Dr. Zhang earned his Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering from East Normal University, China in 1982; a Masters of Science in Computer Science from Flinders University, South Australia in 1994; and a PhD from School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, UNSW@ADFA, Australian Defence Force Academy, at the University of New South Wales in 1999. Since August 2011, Dr. Zhang has joined Advanced Analytics Institute (AAI), Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) at University of Technology (UTS), Sydney, where he is a research leader of Multimedia and Media Analytics Program in AAI/FEIT at UTS. His research interests include multimedia content management; video understanding; and video coding and communication. Multimedia content management provides advanced algorithms to manage, index search, and retrieve rich multimedia content. Video understanding focuses on automatic or semi-automatic extraction of semantic information from video sequences. Video coding and communication targets on an efficient method for video compression and robust transmission. Apart from more than 100 paper publications and book chapters from his research output, he was co-author of more than ten patents filed in US, UK, Japan and Australia including five issued US patents. From January 2004 - July 2011, Dr. Zhang was a Principal Researcher with National ICT Australia (NICTA), where he was a research leader of Multimedia and Video Communications Research at NICTA Sydney Lab in UNSW Kensington campus. He led several NICTA research projects in the areas of computer vision, multimedia content analysis and management, and multimedia content indexing and query.

Dr. Wu Jiang
(University of Technology, Sydney Senior Lecturer)
Dr. Qiang Wu received the B.Eng. and the M.Eng. degree in electronic engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, in 1996 and 1998, and the PhD degree in computing science from University of Technology, Sydney, Australia, in 2004. He joined in the School of Computing and Communications, University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), Australia in 2003, where he is currently a senior lecturer. He has published widely on image processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition. His current research interests include object detection, human behaviour analysis, biometrics, visual information analysis/retrieval, spiral architecure, etc. He serves as referee for many journals including IEEE TSMC-B, IEEE TCSVT, PR, PRL and etc. He has served several international conferences under the different roles such as PC chair, local chair, technical chair, and etc.
Summary of Lecture:
In this talk, we will give a comprehensive overview of our research outcomes in vision and learning. We will show our work of feature detection, selection and extraction for object detection. Boosting, SVM, structured learning, inference and other machine learning tools are used in our research. A set of demo will be shown to link our research to many applications including vehicle number plate recognition, vehicle detection, boat detection and human detection. We will then extend our talk to a higher semantic level of human action classification and recognition. We have also applied computer vision and machine learning methods into multimedia including interest event detection based audio clues and video adaptation for QoS.
