　 Prof. Markus Pessa is the Founder and Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC). He has authored 257 journal articles and cited 2217 times during 1986-2007 (ISI Web of Knowledge); H-index being 24. He has led 40 research projects over the past ten years.He has played a seminal role in establishing new industry in Finland (laser manufacture). He has also set up an organisation called Laser Competence Centre Finland to accelerate the transfer of knowledge from academia to industry, and founded an Industry Club which supports the development of optical technologies. He is a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters and the Finnish Academy of Technology. He is a Knight, First Class, of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, awarded by the President of the Republic of Finland, 1996, and was designated Professor of the Year (Finland) by the Trade Union of University Professors, 1998. He is a Member of many scientific organizations and the Editorial Boards of New Journal of Physics (London, 2003 - present) and IEE Optics Proceedings (London, 2005 - present). He is also a Member of the Board of Directors of the Kista Photonics Research Center (Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden) and the Finnish Cultural Insitute in Tokyo (Japan), and is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (London). He was awarded an Innovation Prize for the development of lasers of ultra-fast high-power lasers by the New Technology Foundation (Finland), 2005. He was elected a Foreign Associate of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE), 2006. He received the gold medal of the City of Tampere in 2006 and a golden Public Service Medal from the President of Finland, Tarja Halonen, in 2006, in recognition of long service for the good of the state. The Millennium Technology Prize Foundation granted a Millennium Distinction Award in 2007. He was awarded by the Main Prize of Pirkanmaa Cultural Foundation in 2007 in Finland. The Oulu University Association named him Alumnus of the Year 2007. He was a Member Committee of the Ministry of Education (2005) for planning a nationwide research program on Nanoscience and -technology for the years 2007-2010.
