On February 27, 2008, the Provincial Work Conference of Science and Technology was held in Xi’an. After examination by Examining Commission of Shaanxi Science and Technology Awards, and approval by Provincial Awarding Committee of Science and Technology, Shaanxi Provincial government decided to honor 231 researches with desirable scientific and economic benefits. “Developing Rotators Glass with Big-calibre and High Optical Homogeneity” jointly undertaken by Zou Kuaishen, Lu Min, Zhao Wei, Zhai Youshan, Li Weinan, Liu Minggang and Yang Bingyun from our Institute was awarded Third Prize of of Shaanxi Awards for Science and Technology.
Rotators Glass, also called Faraday Rotators Glass, a special optical glass with Magneto-optical effects, is mainly applied in high-power laser output control of visible light and near-infrared wave bands, and widely used in magneto-optical isolators, switches, modulation and magneto-optical sensors, and is irreplaceable materials for high-quality and big-calibre Faraday Rotator elements

For a long time, in Chinas high-powered laser system development, big-calibre rotators glass used in optical isolators has always been a bottleneck for developing the system. Although Chinas rotators glass research has been made for more than 20 years and China has already manufactured ordinary rotators glass, the breakthrough in key techniques to develop big-calibre rotators glass still has not been acquired, which far from meets the needs for this kind of material in scientific research and great national scientific projects.

In early 2007, the project group of the Institute, after ten months of arduous work, made great breakthroughs in key techniques to develop big-calibre rotators glasses and successfully developed rotators glass with big-calibre and high optical homogeneity (φ300mm). The glass is superior to its Japanese counterparts in every performance, and is technically qualified for practical application. This research breaks a foreign monopoly and blockage as well as supplies a domestic gap, providing key technological support for national high-tech development and meeting urgent needs in great national scientific projects.
