During the period of 1 January 2018 to 1 January 2019, Dr. Pengfei Wang conducted a research visit at the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) at the University of Adelaide as a Visiting Scholar (supported by the China Scholarships Council, CSC), working together with Prof Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem, the Deputy Director of the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) and Deputy Director of the Optofab of the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF). Dr.Pengfei Wang undertaken collaborative research on the development and fabrication of low-loss germanate/fluoride glasses and fibers for mid-infrared and high nonlinearity applications, to explore the fundamental science behinds the techniques of developing low-loss glass and fibers, including optimization of the glass preparation, the preform extrusion and fiber fabrication procedures. This work provides guidance for developing other low-loss mid-infrared glasses/fibers containing multivalent heavy metal ions such as Pb, Bi, Te, Sb, Zr, etc.

Both two sides are looking forward to continuing the fruitful and stimulating collaboration with each other, including future joint projects and funding opportunities, academic visits, student exchange and joint projects funded by Chinese and Australian research agencies such as National Natural Science Foundation of China and Australian Research Council as well as local government funding. The ultimate aim is to establish a joint laboratory on cutting-edge glass and fibers research collaboration between IPAS and the R&D Center of Advanced Optoelectronics and Biomaterials, State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics, Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM), CAS.
In 28th, Oct. 2019, Dr. YinlanRuan, both as the Science Leadership Committee member of the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) at the University of Adelaide, and representative of Prof Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem and IPAS, visited the R&D Center of Advanced Optoelectronics and Biomaterials, XIOPM. Dr. YinlanRuan introduced the majors and research fields of the University of Adelaide, update research progress in IPAS, policies on doctoral and postdoctoral student scholarship, and CSC visiting scholars to the university.
A full day seminar was successfully organized to communicate the research work on optics, special glass and glass fibers as well as their applications, in order to promote the potential collaborative research. Professional researchers from Xian Jiaotong University, Northwestern polytechnical university, Yanshan University and XIOPMwere also invited to introduce their work and exchange our ideas on optics, micro-structured glass fiber, sensing with fibers, films as well as optical methods.
