Research Fellow Yao Baoli Won the Title of “Scientific Chinese” The People of the Year 2017

On Jun. 29, 2018, "Scientific Chinese” The People of the Year 2017 ceremony sponsored by Science Chinese Magazine was held in Beijing Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. Nearly 500 people from the National People’s Congress, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, National Health Commission, the China Association for Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and other institutions, and some academicians and scientists from CAS and CAE attended the scene. Peng Peiyun, vice chairman of the Ninth National People’s Congress Standing Committee, and several academicians attended the meeting as guests and presented awards to the winners.

This ceremony has unveiled a list of winners in 12 fields including life sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry and geology, information technology, materials science, electronic engineering, basic medicine and pharmacy. The research fellow Yao Baoli from XIOPM was rated as theScientific Chinese” The People of the Year 2017 in the field of information technology. A total of 46 researchers in the field were nominated and 15 were awarded. At the same time, Academician Huang Xuhua, the “father of China’s nuclear submarine”, won the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the "Mozi" quantum science experimental satellite team led by Academician Pan Jianwei, the “father of China’s quantum”, and the innovative research team of the tropical western Pacific submarine scientific observation network led by Wang Fan won the Innovation Team Awards.

The research fellow Yao Baoli holds the posts of Deputy Director General of State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics and the State Council Special Allowance Specialist. He has long been engaged in the field of information optics and biophotonics, and has achieved a series of results in the direction of super-resolution optical imaging, optical micro-manipulation, digital holographic microscopy, and vector optics. He has published more than 220 papers in academic journals at home and abroad, published 5 monographs in Chinese and English, authorized 16 invention patents, made more than 50 invitation reports at international and domestic academic conferences, and organized 4 international conferences. Under his leadership, the China’s first structured illumination super-resolution microscopic imaging system with independent intellectual property rights was developed with its resolution reaching the international highest level of similar technology; the laser optical tweezer products developed by him are of independent intellectual property rights and have been successfully launched on the market and exported to Canada; he also developed the world’s first two-photon excitation laser scanning real-time stereo microscope. His research results received concern from the peers at home and abroad. One of his paper titled Sci. Rep. has been downloaded for 26,000 times and the paper Opt. Lett. was approved to be published 8 days after he submitted. Besides, a number of his papers were selected as journal cover papers, important annual progress, included in Wikipedia, reprinted and listed as high-volume papers. He won 2 first prizes in science and technology in Shaanxi Province and 1 second prize. He was awarded the Outstanding Returned Student of Shaanxi Province, Shaanxi Youth Science and Technology Award, Wang Kuancheng Western Scholar Outstanding Contribution Award of CAS. He was also rated as the Outstanding Graduate Instructor Award of CAS for 4 times, and the Japan High Speed Imaging Award in 2015. He is a member of China Optical Society, China Optical Engineering Society, Shaanxi Optical Society, and Shaanxi Provincial Physical Society; the Secretary General of the High-speed Photography and Photonics Committee of the Chinese Optical Society, the Member of Biomedical Photonics Committee of the Chinese Society of Optics, the Member of Professional Committee of Holographic and Light Information Processing of the Chinese Optical Society, the Member of New Method and New Technology Committee of the Chinese Biophysical Society, the Member of Scientific Advisory Committee of the High Speed Imaging and Photonics International Organization Committee.

The research fellow Yao Baoli has trained more than 20 outstanding graduate students, 3 of whom have won the "Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award of CAS", 1 won the "Special Award of the Dean of CAS", and 1 the "Humboldt Research Scholar Award" in Germany, 1 the “Outstanding Youth Fund” by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. They have carried out fruitful international cooperation with peer experts from Austria, Germany and the United States, etc. One of the professors won the “Sanqin Friendship Award” by Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government and the “The Most Influential Foreign Expert over the 40 Years of Reform and Opening up” by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs.

The “Scientific Chinese” The People of the Year selection campaign began in 2002 and has been successfully held for 15 consecutive years. It has become one of the most influential activities in the science and technology field. It selects scientific research workers who focus on scientific research, dare to innovate in science and technology, make breakthroughs in scientific research, and have a major impact on China’s scientific and technological progress. Academician Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, was awarded the first "Scientific Chinese The Person of the Year 2002". In 2015, Tu Youyou, the Scientific Chinese (2011) The People of the Year won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Up to now, hundreds of outstanding scientists, scholars and technology entrepreneurs who have made outstanding contributions to China’s scientific and technological progress, including Yang Zhenning, Sun Jiadong, Bai Chunli, Yu Min, Xu Zhihong, Zhu Qingshi, Wang Enge, Shi Yigong and Pan Jianwei received this honor.
