At 10:00 a.m. on May 16, Xidian University Principal and Academician Zheng Xiaojing paid a visit to our institute with a delegation with 12 members in total. Director Zhao Wei and Deputy Director Gao Limin and other members of XIOPM warmly greeted the arrival of the investigation delegation.
Principal Zheng Xiaojing expressed sincere gratitude to Director Zhao Wei for his attaching importance to visiting and exchange of Xidian University. She said that Xidian University and XIOPM considerably share ideas, and both parties play an important part in its respective field. Favorable factors of favorable climatic, geographical and human conditions laid a solid foundation for conducting long-term cooperation. Principal Zheng Xiaojing was of the opinion that both higher education institutes and scientific research institutes shoulder the double mission of scientific research and talent cultivation. She hoped to strengthen further cooperation between two sides through visiting and exchange, to expand cooperation field of jointly cultivating talents by combination of science and education, and to explore to establish long-term effective mechanism of jointly cultivating talents so as to promote the innovation in science and technology together.
Zheng Xiaojing proposes corporation intentions in three aspects on behalf of Xidian University:
I. Jointly cultivating high-level talents. Xidian University has excellent talents cultivation tradition and good student resources. As a well-known scientific research institute subordinated to Chinese Academy of Sciences, XIOPM conducts cutting-edge technology research faced with national requirements and is a favorable training base of improving scientific research practical ability of high-level talents. One possesses profound academic theoretical basis, while the other is equipped with thorough engineering practical platform. Both of them can make full use of their respective advantage and characteristics on jointly cultivating high-level innovative talents. Xidian University has established three new schools for the purpose of “advocating the science and returning to engineering”. To improve cultivation of high-level talents by strengthening cooperation between university and institute, the success opening of Zutong Elite Class jointly held by the two sides proved the good beginning of jointly cultivating talents.
II. Discipline and cultivation joint establishing. Preponderant and main disciplines of Xidian University and XIOPM have a lot of similarities and intersectionality, which provides broad space of cooperation for discipline joint establishing. Discipline joint establishing can drive the share of teaching body. High-level talents cultivation can be improved by high-level scientific research through mutually recruiting tutors, part-time teachers and other ways to coordinating teachers’ resources. Meanwhile, high-level talents can sustainably supply human resources required by scientific research and form a brand new situation of advantage complementation and synergetic development
III. Scientific research collaborating with innovation. Both higher education institutes and scientific research institutes are essential ingredient of system of scientific and technological innovation of the state. Without engineering practice, cultivation of high-level scientific and technological innovative talents would be only an empty talk. By ways of jointly establishing laboratories and collaborative innovative centers and undertaking scientific research mission, the two sides can cooperate and form strategic development alliance so as to jointly promote the innovation in science and technology and out-put of innovative products
Director Zhao Wei extended sincere welcome to Principal Zheng Xiaojing for visiting. He said that collaboration between scientific research institutes and higher education institutes is not only a strategic choice to build an innovation-originated nation under the background of Big Science Times, but also an effective way of integrating superior resources and forming joint development. Director Zhao Wei spoke highly of the theory on school management proposed by Academician Zheng Xiaojing, that is “advocating the science and returning to engineering”. He said that it could be seen from huge change of Xidian University that Xidian University is planning quality engineering for high-level talents cultivation, so science and education cooperation with Xidian University possesses important strategic significance and hoped to make contribution to its development through substantive cooperation. Besides, Director Zhao Wei made point-to-point arrangement in terms of substantive cooperation.
Deputy Director Gao Limin said that it was felt an insufficiency of innovation power in some scientific research projects, especially in engineering projects. So integration of high-level talents cultivation into engineering practice can not only accelerate the speed of growth, but also provide an “impounding reservoir” for scientific and technological innovative talents to effectively enrich the scientific and technological innovative strength basis.
Person-in-charge of relevant laboratories and academic leaders of XIOPM responded actively and preliminarily expressed the detailed cooperation field and matters concerned. Finally, Xidian University Principal and Academician Zheng Xiaojing presented a hanging dish printed with “Cooperation & Exchange” as a gift to XIOPM on behalf of the university. Then the participants of the two sides posed for a group photo to mark the occasion.
