On June 13, the 9th Guanghua Engineering Technology Award Ceremony was held in Beijing and 26 engineering technology experts were honored with this award. Researcher Zhao Baochang of XIOPM won the Engineering Award of Guanghua Engineering Technology Award. The Guanghua Engineering Technology Award includes Achievement Award, Engineering Award and Youth Award. The presentation ceremony is held once every two years. This year, there are 1 Achievement Award, 13 Engineering Awards and 12 Youth Awards.
Known as the top prize in the field of China’s engineering technology, Guanghua Engineering Technology Award is administered by Chinese Academy of Engineering and set for the main purpose of encouraging the engineers and scientists who make outstanding achievements and contributions in the fields of engineering technology and administration. Since the first presentation ceremony in 1996, 174 persons in total have won the honor and it is the 9th ceremony this year.

Researcher Zhao Baochang is in a media interview after Chang’e II successfully obtained the Sinus Iridium image of the lunar surface.
Researcher Zhao Baochang is a famous expert in China’s optics research area. He was majored in Optical Instrument of Zhejiang University and came to work in Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of CAS when graduated in 1962. He was the director of XIOPM from 1995 to 1999. For fifty years, he was successively engaged in researches of optical and electrical test technology, space optical observation technology and interference imaging spectroscopy technology, making significant contributions. He got many national and provincial awards, for instance, award of special government allowance in 1992, honor as the outstanding contribution expert granted by Shaanxi provincial Party committee and Shaanxi provincial people’s government in 1999 and the commemorative certificate of China’s first human spaceflight mission in 2003.
In China’s remarkable lunar exploration program, researcher Zhao Baochang was the chief designer of Chang’e I’s optical imaging detecting system and Chang’e II’s CCD stereo camera. The CCD stereo camera he developed successfully took the first high-resolution image of lunar surface, the high-precision partial 3D image of Sinus Iridium area and striograph of the whole lunar face whose resolution could be up to 7 meters-the highest resolution in the world nowadays. These assured the complete success of Chang’e II lunar exploration program. Zhao Baochang’s major achievements in the lunar exploration program brought him honors like “May 1 Labor Medal”. In Chang’e II lunar exploration program mission, he won the “Outstanding Contributor of Chang’e II Lunar Exploration Program Mission” and the General Secretary Hu Jintao presented the prize to him in person.
