For 50 years, we go through challenges and hardships and witness our achievements and success. In the second spring of 12th five-year plan, Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of CAS ushered in its 50th anniversary.

In the morning of April 18, 2012, the stage of Zutonglou Lecture Hall of XIOPM was decorated by beautiful flowers and green leaves which created a festival atmosphere. Celebrated slogans were hung around the lecture hall, including the expectations that president Bai Chunli wrote to the XIOPM: to serve  the people, base on the West and strive for glory, and the other slogans, for instance, pursuing achievements, cultivating talents and creating theories; making new development in 2020; competing in the 12th five-year plan, making fresh glory in “One Orientation, Three Major Breakthrough and Five Cultivation Focuses (One-Three-Five Plan)”. All these slogans show that the XIOPM people expect to work hard to realize the goals of innovation in 2020, 12th five-year plan, and One-Three-Five Plan and determine to create new achievements for the scientific and technological development of our country.

At 9 o’ clock, the magnificent national anthem drew the curtain of the 50th anniversary meeting of XIOPM. The secretary of the Party Committee Wu Wenbin made the address on behalf of all the leaders. He expressed warm welcome to the academician Gong Huixing who came from far away. He said that XIOPM, in the past 50 years, emancipated mind, investigated bravely, boldly engaged in practice, deepened the reform, overcame difficulties and developed continuously. In the 50 years, XIOPM has been developed and constructed with the care of Party and the state leaders and with the strong support from leaders at all level, brother institutes and all sectors of the society. The fifty-year growth and development embodied the endeavor and wisdom of several generations of XIOPM and carried contributions and devotion of the friends who ever studied and worked here. On behalf of party and government leadership, he showed gratitude to the leaders at all level, brother units and all sectors of the society for their care and support, and gave warm regards and thankfulness to all the cadres and staff, retirees, graduates and comrades who ever studied and worked in XIOPM.

Director Zhao Wei of XIOPM delivered a speech with title of Looking Back on History, Looking Ahead into the Future, Innovating to Create Fresh Glory. Director Zhao Wei said that the 50th anniversary of XIOPM was a rare and important experience of every XIOPM people, and it was honor and pride for us. Looking back on the past 50 years, Zhao Wei emphasized that the innovation and development were the unshakable determination and belief of us.

Director Zhao Wei’s report reviewed the 50 years experience of XIOPM from 9 aspects. Over half the century, XIOPM insisted on the national demand and world scientific leading edge. Generations of XIOPM people struggled, worked together, went through arduous pioneering, reform and open and innovation and development. With XIOPM spirits “lenience, diligence, teamwork and innovation”, they created a lot of Firsts in the optical field and wrote new chapters of innovation: from the hard pioneering in 1962 to the innovation 2020 project of CAS; from the initial 250 staff to the present over 1500 staff; from the first time it attended the international conference to holding large-scale and influential international academic conferences; from nanosecond to picosecond and femtosecond. XIOPM made significant contributions to the national scientific development and trained lots of hi-tech talents. In recent years, with the fast promotion of achievement transfer, its contribution to the local economic development becomes increasingly apparent.

The comprehensive strength of XIOPM today is growing continuously, the scientific expenses is rising, the subject disciplines are expanding, talent effect is becoming apparent, the achievements transfer and conversion is creating new successes and the life of the staff is better and better. The past results were remarkable and the future plan is inspiring. Director Zhao Wei represented the leadership to express that they would lead all the staff to inherit the fine traditions of XIOPM, carry forward the culture of honesty, truth, cooperation and innovation and the spirit of lenience, diligence, teamwork and innovation, solidly promote the innovation 2020 project of the institute, aim at realizing the major breakthrough and cultivation of One-Three-Five Plan, keep accelerating the speed of technology transfer and conversion, try to make new achievements, create better future in the progress of innovation 2020 project and make new contributions to scientific and economic development of our country. After the anniversary, the special academic report of the academician of CAS, Gong Huixing, and the theatrical performances of our institute were held on schedule.
