The 15th National Optical Fiber Communication and 16th Integrated Optics Academic Conference is jointly hosted by the Fiber and Integrated Optics Speciality Committee of the Chinese Optical Society, Optical Communication Committee of China Institute of Communications, Chinese Institute of Electronics On Communication Society, and undertaken by State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics, XIOPM. This conference was successfully held in the meeting center of Xi'an Shuijingdao Hotel on June 27, 2011. More than 130 experts and scholars from universities, scientific research institutes and relevant specialized companies nationwide attended this academic conference.
The major topic for discussion of this conference is to summarize and exchange the newest achievements of scientific research, new technology, and new product research progress in the fields of optical fiber communication and integrated optics, and discuss the development direction and future trend of this field. Mao Qian, the chairman of the Optical Communication Committee of China Institute of Communications and the vice-chairman of this conference presided the opening ceremony. Liu Desen, chairman of the Fiber and Integrated Optics Specialty Committee and the chairman of this conference, and Liu Songhao, academician of CAS made speeches successively on the opening ceremony of the conference. Researcher Zhao Wei, the director of XIOPM made a welcome speech on behalf of the undertaker unit.

During the conference, nine famous experts and scholars were invited to give a speech focusing on hot spot issues in the field of optical fiber communication and integrated optics. Professor Mao Qian from FiberHome Technologies Group, Professor Fan Chongcheng from Tsinghua University, and Professor Jiang Xiaoqing from Zhejiang University have made speeches respectively of "Current Status and Challenges of Optical Communication Technology Development", "Current Status, Prospect and Innovation of Chinese Optoelectronic Industry", and "Research of Waveguide Devices Based on Medium-Long Wave Infared Band of Silicon Material". Besides, researcher of XIOPM made speeches respectively of "New-Type Large-Mode-Area Fiber", "Research on Fiber Laser with High Energy and Short Pulse". 45 representatives made oral reports of academic thesis respectively in three venues on 13 topics. This conference was supported by China Communication, Optics and Precision Engineering, Optics Journal, Acta Photonica Sinica, and Communications Weekly and CCIDCOM.
The success of this conference provided an important stage for colleagues from universities, research institutes and relevant companies to exchange new thoughts, discuss new technology, and show new products in the field of integrated optics and optical fiber communication, which has a positive facilitation on the academic exchange, technology innovation and commercialization of achievements. Representatives that attended the conference hoped that this kind of conference be held regularly, and absorb more research institutes and industry peers to participate in the organization and exchange of the conference, and make this conference a professional academic conference with greater influence in the field of optics and photonics nationwide.
