 Introduction to Lecturer:

Gao Wen, professor of Beijing University, member of IEEE

He obtained the Doctor's Degree of Electronics of Tokyo University, Japan in 1991. He was professor of Harbin Institute of Technology from 1991 to 1996, and researcher of calculation institute of CAS from 1996 to 2005. He is currently a part time editor (AE) of Video Technology Journal (T-CSVT) of IEEE, JVCI(Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation), and SPIC(Signal Processing: Image Communication). He is also a member of VSPC and MSA of IEEE, head of Chinese delegation of ISO/IEC motion picture coding experts group, leader of AVS of MII, and chief scientist of program 973 "video coding theory and approaches based on visual characteristic ".

His major research field is application of artificial intelligence and multimedia technology, emphasis on research of computer vision, pattern recognition and image processing, multi-media data compression, multi-mode connector, and virtual reality. Major research interest is video coding and video analysis in recent years. He has obtained second prize for national science and technology four times, and second prize for national technology invention.

Summary of Lecture:

Video coding is the most core technology link in digital video system. The challenge of video coding technology including higher code compression efficiency, faster compression algorithm, more flexible code, stronger ability of anti-error code, and united code with information channel. The development of video coding technology has a history of 50 years, standardization of video coding has a history of 20 years, and has formed 2 generation technology standard. The first generation is MPEG-2 Standard, in the condition of imperceptible error, its code compression efficiency is 50:1. 2nd Generation has three representatives: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, VC-1, AVS, in the condition of imperceptible error, its code compression efficiency is 100:1-150:1. Experts of video coding are researching on video coding standard of next generation, hope to achieve the compression efficiency of 200:1-300:1. This Lecture will discuss on the technology challenge of video coding including how to increase the coding efficiency, how to satisfy the industrial demand including 3D Video, and the current status and evolution map of AVS.
