The afternoon of September 4, Professor Markus Pessa of Finnish Tampere University of Technology --- Finnish academicians of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, special member of British Institute of Physics, foreign acdemician of the US National Academy of Engineering --- visited Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM) of Chinese Academy of Sciences and took on academic exchange activities. XIOPM Director Zhao Wei received him and attended the activities.
Professor Markus Pessa, the founder of Optoelectronics Research Center (ORC-Europe's largest research center MBE) in Tampere University of Technology, is one of the pioneers in European Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and has published more than 750 research papers. In the past 10 years, he directed more than 40 projects of Finland and the European Union. One of most remarkable achievements by Professor Markus Pessa is his contributions to Finnish laser industry: more than 50 high-tech companies have been set up under his influence, of which nine of them are under his direct involvement and leadership, so he has been known as the Father of Finnish laser.
Professor Markus Pessa made an academic report entitled “Optoelectronics research of Optoelectronics Research Center (ORC) in Tampere University of Technology and its industrialization" to the scientific researchers in our Institute. In the report, he gave us detailed introduction to the history of development, research direction of Optoelectronics Research Center (ORC) in Tampere University of Technology and its current progress and results achieved in semiconductor’s functional materials and devices, etc. In addition, he described the situation about the scientific and technological cooperation and promoting industrialization between the research center and some enterprises.
Professor Markus Pessa also conducted a special academic discussion with participants and visited State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics accompanied by the institute leaders.
