On Oct. 24, the two-day “2006 China-Italy Bilateral Workshop on Photonics for Communication and Sensing” completed successfully in Xi’an, China.
In order to promote scientific and technological cooperation and exchange between China and Italy, on July 4, 2005, CAS and the Ministry of Teaching and Research, Italy signed the China/Italy memorandum on scientific cooperation memorandum in Daoyutai State Guesthouse, Beijing, as one of China-Italy scientific and technological cooperation projects. In 2005 CAS XIOPM and Italian Sant’ Anna Senior Research School jointly established “China/Italy Joint Laboratory of Ultrafast Photon Communication”, through which the two parties will carry out cooperative researches of next-generation ultra-high-speed photon network communication system and the key technology. This bilateral academic workshop serves as a specific implementation plan for driving the project.

The conference is an international academic conference jointly organized and sponsored by optical communication research institutions and optical sensing research units of China and Italy, and a high-level academic exchange and dialogue in the fields between China and Italy. Totally near 100 domestic and foreign representatives attended the workshop, including about 30 famous Italian experts and scholars in fields of optical communication and optical sensing from University of Milan, Turin Polytechnic University and Sant’ Anna Senior Research School, such as Professor Carlo Giacomo Someda, expert of research of optical communication and photonics early in Europe, Professor Giancarlo Prati, Chairman of Italian National Telecommunication Union. And Mr. Coission, counselor of science and technology in Italian Embassy to China, also paid special trip to the opening ceremony of the workshop. The Chinese attendants include some famous experts and scholar in basic researches and research of applied technology in optical communication and optical sensing from CAS XIOPM, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tianjin University and Beinjing University of Posts & Telecommunications. In addition, some enterprises such as Shenzhen Huawei Company and Beijing Lingyun Photoelectric Company, etc sent their representatives to participate in the international academic forum.

On Oct. 23, “2006 China-Italy Bilateral Workshop on Photonics for Communication and Sensing” opened solemnly in “Sofit Internal Conference Center of People’s Building”, Xi’an. CAS Academician Hou Xun made opening speech, and Professor Giancarlo Prati, Chairman of Italian National Telecommunication Union and Zhao Wei, Director of XIOPM addressed in the opening ceremony respectively. They expressed their congratulations to successful holding of the workshop, and their confidence that the holding of the workshop will play active role in promoting international development of the applied technology in optical communication and optical sensing, and in further enhancing scientific and technological cooperation in the field between China and Italy. In the following academic exchange activities, many famous experts and scholars from the two countries, including Italian Professor Carlo Giacomo Someda, Professor Giancarlo Prati and Professor Mario Martinelli, and Chinese Chen Minghua with Tsinghua University, Su Yikai with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yu Jinlong with Tianjin University, Zhang Jie and Wu Jian with Beinjing University of Posts & Telecommunications with our Institute made academic report in succession. The workshop-organized 41 special reports mainly centered on exchange and discussion of international latest research achievements and development of applied technologies in fields of optical communication and optical sensing such as optical fiber network, optical transmission system, optical sensing technology, optical signal processing, communication-use optical materials and measurement technology, etc.

On Oct. 22, Italian made the special trip to China visited our Institute in advance.
