High-Speed Photography and Photonics is a traditional and active subject that focuses on transient changing process of substance world and characteristics of high-speed objects, and is an important branch of optics. It comes down to many technique and research fields including optics, mechanics, electronics, mathematics, measurement, and materials, and also has been widely applied in physics, chemistry, biology, interspaces, and materials etc. The developed countries have devoted large number of manpower and material resources into this field for long-term research. There is a worldwide tradition that is to hold the international congress on high-speed photography and photonics for every two years. Normally, the congress is held in a country that possesses high research level in this field. In the world, China has quite high research status in this field, especially in ultra-short laser and converting tube high-speed photography etc. The Chinese Optical Society sets up High-Speed Photography and Photonics Committee.
In September 1988, 18th International Congress on High-Speed Photography and Photonics, sponsored by the Chinese Optical Society and organized by XIOPM, CAS, was successfully held in Xi’an, China. In September 2004, during the 26th congress in USA, all national delegates agreed that the 27th congress in 2006 would be held in China.
After been confirmed by Chinese Association of Science and Technology, the Chinese Optical Society decides to hold “27th International Congress on High-Speed Photography and Photonics” in Xi’an during Sept. 17-22, 2006. Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences will organize the congress.
