During May 23-27, 2016, the 17th International Symposium on Laser Precision Microfabrication sponsored by Japan Laser Processing Society and undertaken by  Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) together with Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics and the National Key Laboratory for Transient Optics and Photon Technology was solemnly held in the ancient city of Xi’an, with participants of more than 330 experts and scholars and 20 professional manufacturers from 17 countries and regions including US, Germany, UK, Japan and France. The conference was chaired by Professor Koji Sugioka of Japan Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, and co-chaired by XIOPM Research Fellow Cheng Guanghua and Research Fellow Cheng Ya of Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics.

The international symposium on laser precision microfabrication is an important international conference in laser precision processing field. Since it was first held in Omiya, Japan in 2000, the conference has been successfully held in Singapore, Munich, Germany, Williamsburg, US and Vienna, Austria, etc, and has become a special-subject international one with extensive influence and extremely high academic level in laser precision processing field. The first 16 symposiums were held in foreign universities or research institutes, while this session was held in China for the first time. The conference invited Professor John T. Fourkas from US University of Maryland, Academician Gong Qihuang from Peking University, Professor Hiroyuki Niino from Industrial Technology Research Institute of Japan, Professor Lu Yongfeng from US University of Nebraska Lincoln, Professor Michael Schmidt from University of Erlangen Nuremberg, Germany, Professor Razvan Stioan from Hubert Curien Lab, France, Professor Xu Xianfan from US Purdue University, and other famous domestic and foreign experts and scholars in laser precision processing field, to jointly explore the latest progress and future development trend in laser micro nano fabrication field. The conference provides a very good platform for exchange between domestic and foreign coworkers in the discipline, and will play active role in promoting development in laser micro nano fabrication of China.

Professor Koji Sugioka from Japan Institute of Physical and Chemical Research chaired the opening ceremony, while XIOPM Research Fellow delivered the welcoming speech. Professor John T. Fourkas from US University of Maryland, Academician Gong Qihuang from Peking University and Mr. Klaus Loffler from German TRUMP Company addressed the conference with wonderful reports.

This session of symposium was greatly supported by XIOPM and the National Key Laboratory for Transient Optics and Photon Technology, CAS Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, National Key Laboratory for Strong Field Physics and East China Normal University, and subsidized by the Committee of the National Nature Science Foundation of China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
