On October 27, Professor Nigel Copner and its partners of Britain University of South Wales visited XIOPM and talked to XIOPM regarding to scientific and technological cooperation in micro-nano photonics field.

During the visit, Director Zhao Wei and other leaders and experts, together with Professor Nigel Copner and his partners, focusing on strengthening scientific and technological cooperation, scholar visiting and postgraduate cultivation, held talks, and reached a consensus on establishing (Sino-British) Micro-Nano Photonics Joint Research Center and held signing ceremony.

Separately representing XIOPM State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics, CAS and Wireless and Optoelectronics Research and Innovation Center of Britain University of South Wales, Director Zhao Wei and Professor Nigel Copner signed the agreement. Professor Nigel Copner was hired as the (British) director of (Sino-British) Micro-Nano Photonics Joint Research Center and Director Zhao Wei was hired as the director of the said center with the designation of Professor Nigel Copner. Over 30 persons including head of Department of Science and Management Xie Xiaoping, deputy directors of State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics Wang Yishan and Yao Baoli, chairman of Focuslight Company, employees and students of State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics attended the signing ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Head of Human Resource Division Man Peng. After the signing ceremony, Director Zhao Wei and Professor Nigel Copner appeared at nameplate unveiling ceremony of (Sino-British) Micro-Nano Photonics Joint Research Center.

Professor Nigel Copner is the chief professor of Wireless and Optoelectronics Research and Innovation Center, University of South Wales, founder of Cymtec Company and also the technical adviser of Global Laser, Oclaro, Enterprise Ireland and Optoplex Company, etc. He is mainly dedicated to the research on application of laser & optoelectronics, micro-nano photonics in the fields of precision measurement, communication, light source and life sciences. He once worked in DERA, Renishaw and American JDSU company, etc. and owns more than 40 patents.

During the stay in XIOPM, Professor Nigel Copner paid a visit to State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics, made an academic report titled “Light Fantastic” for scientific researchers and exchanged opinions with the participants. Afterwards, he visited Focuslight Company and Femto Technology Company, highly appraised the contributions made by XIOPM to promoting industrialization development of scientific research results, and expressed his cooperation intention with the said companies.

With the establishment of (Sino-British) Micro-Nano Photonics Joint Research Center, XIOPM and Britain will be able to cooperate in many fields like free space optical modulation, efficient energy (solar energy), biological sensors and measurement (plasmonic) and micro-nano photonic devices (communication), etc. and they decided to hold academic exchanges (video conferences) regularly. The foundation of Joint Research Center will surely strengthen the communication and exchange of XIOPM and international enterprises of the same industry, efficiently gather micro-nano photonics scientific research power, speed up the establishment and development of micro-nano photonics research platform of XIOPM and promote the industrialization of micro-nano photonics research results.
