High-speed photography and photonics is a traditional and dynamic discipline researching the instant change process of the physical world and properties of high-speed moving object, and an important branch of optics field. It involves very wide technology and research fields, including optics, machinery, electricity, computation, measurement and material, and has very wide applications in physics, chemistry, biology, information, space and material, etc. For the above-mentioned reasons, advanced countries in the world have put significant efforts and monies into the field for long-term research. Internationally the practice of holding “International Conference of High-speed Photography and Photonics” once every two years has been formed, and the conference is usually held in a country with very high academic level in the discipline.
China enjoys very high academic position in the field, and deserves a place particularly in ultra-short laser pulse generation and image converter high-speed photography, etc. For over 40 years Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM) has researched and developed as series of high-speed camera, and deserved to be called a professional and leading institute in the discipline domestically on the basis of its so many achievements, wide-ranging fields and high research level, and of winning national award for scientific and technological progress Class I, II and III for many times. As the forerunner and representative of China in high-speed photography, Gong Zutong, academician of CAS, and founder and first director of XIOPM, won the Photo-Sonics Award from the “International Conference of High-speed Photography and Photonics ” in 1981.
Under the Chinese Optical Society there is special high-speed photography and photonics speciality committee affiliated to XIOPM. Its current director Zhao Wei research fellow is the national representative in the international conference of high-speed imaging and photonics.
In Sept. 1988, the Chinese Optical Society held the 18th International Conference of High-speed Photography and Photonics in Xi’an successfully.
In Sept. 2006, the Chinese Optical Society held the 27th International Conference of High-speed Photography and Photonics（ the 27th ICHSPP） in Xi’an, with CAS XIOPM as the undertaker. In Xi’an conference, through discussion and adoption by national representative conference, it was decided to change the name of the series conference into the “Conference of High-speed Imaging and Photonics” from the former one of the “Conference of High-speed Photography and Photonics” since the 28th conference, so as to expand the range of the series conference. “The 28th International Conference on High-speed Imaging and Photonics” was held in Canberra, Australia in Nov. 2008. “The 29th International Conference on High-speed Imaging and Photonics” will held in Japan in 2010.
