The Fiber and Integrated Optics Speciality Committee of Chinese Optical Society
The Fiber and Integrated Optics Speciality Committee of Chinese Optical Society was initiated and prepared by Mr. Gong Zutong, the famous optics forerunner of China and CAS academician, and others, passed enlarged meeting of executive member of the council, the Chinese Optical Society on May 9, 1983 through discussion, approved by the Chine Association for Science and Technology on Sept. 22, 1984 and officially established in Xi’an on Oct. 17, 1984, with Mr. Gong Zutong, the famous optics forerunner and academician of CAS as the director of the first speciality committee. Currently the director of the Committee is Professor Yu Rongjin.
Since its establishment, the Fiber and Integrated Optics Speciality Committee, under the leadership of the Chinese Optical Society and by carrying out relevant academic exchange and technical consultations, has become one of main players in organization and exchange of academic activities in fields of fiber optics and integrated optics. The Committee always holds academic conference of fiber optics and integrated optics once a year respectively, and joint conference of fiber optics and integrated optics once every two years.
Since 1996, the Committee, through cooperation with the High-speed Photography and Photonics Speciality Committee of the Chinese Optical Society, has sponsored six sessions of nationwide photonics academic conference for relevant academic exchange on the basis of once every two years.
In 1997, the Committee, jointly with the Optical Communication Committee, China Institute of Communications and China Institute of Electronics on Communication Society, initiated to hold national conference of optical fiber communication and integrated optics, with a view to promoting close exchanges among nationwide researchers of the same trade from similar majors under influence of different academic organizations. By far the Committee has held 13 national academic conferences of fiber optics and integrated optics through cooperation with other organizations.
The above-mentioned academic conferences promote academic exchanges of fiber optics, integrated optics, photonics, optical fiber communication, optical fiber sensing and micro-optics, and give impetus to development of the above-mentioned disciplines in China.
The Journal of Photonics, a core one sponsored by the Chinese Optical Society and published by the Science Press, with the Fiber and Integrated Optics Speciality Committee and the High-speed Photography and Photonics Speciality Committee of the Chinese Optical Society as main members in the Editorial Committee, has developed into a major core learned journal, in which researchers in photonics-related field have confidence and to which the researchers jump at contributions. As report on citation of sci-tech periodicals of China in 2006, the Journal of Photonics ranked No. 5 in terms of general influence factor in physics, and No. 6 in general citation frequency.
