Academic Monograph upon Attosecond Pulse Measurement Technology published by Research Fellow of XIOPM

The academic monograph on attosecond pulse measurement technology composed by Dr. WANG Chao of XIOPM, “Electron Time of Flight and Associated Application”, was recently published by the Science Press of China officially.

Attosecond science is the forefront of transient optics and ultra-fast diagnosis. Attosecond is an extremely tiny unit of time, 1 attosecond=10-18 second. In 2001, the Austrian scientist Ferenc Krausz firstly realized the generation and measurement of attosecond pulse, which declared that the ultra-fast optics has entered a new era of catching electron motion under atomic scale in real time, namely Attosecond Era. The optical electronic technology, which uses the new light source of attosecond pulses as the core probing tool, makes it possible to study the electron motion and electronic correlative mechanism (the common micro-foundation of physical, chemical and biological phenomenon) in real time, and thus is considered to be prone to leading the “Attosecond Scientific Revolution” in the 21 century: creating a “visual revolution” which requires to spy into the natural world in a more fundamental and more subtle level; even further deepening and widening the human’s cognition of the natural world; and promoting the generation of multiple game-changing technologies. At present, Germany, America and Japan have put attosecond pulse technology in the list of strategic priority technologies and many governments and organizations are planning to build major attosecond technological facilities. Being a professional research institute famous home and abroad in the field of transient optics and ultra-fast diagnosis, XIOPM, in resent years is actively planning the attosecond bleeding-edge technology research project and proposing to promote the plan and construction of a large-scale scientific facility called “Xi’an Attosecond Light Source”. Supported by the Major Program of NSFC, Major Research Plan of Ministry of Science and Technology of P.R.C., International Innovation Team of CAS and other programs, the attosecond super-continuum spectrum has been generated currently.

The monograph, on the basis of electron motion time (including generation time, flight time, recombination time and etc.), discussed about relevant applied technology based on pulsed electron beam time-space regulation, covering flight time electron spectroscopy, cross-correlation SXRSC technology, generation of higher harmonic from atomic tunneling in strong laser field and attosecond SXRSC technology, electron pulse time/spatial shaping technology. Electron spectrum detecting technology is not only the key technology in the research in the fields of atomic and molecular physics, surface science and etc. but also the “fingerprinting technology” in the field of current attosecond physical diagnosis. In the monograph, it introduces the single spectrum detecting technology, two-mode refractive spectrum technology, probe-type electron spectrum detecting technology and magnetic-bottle-type flight time electron spectrum detecting technology; emphasizes on analyzing the magnetic-bottle-type electron spectrum technology with extreme heat insulation which is applied into isolated attosecond pulse diagnosis with the time of the unit 24as of the single atom of the next generation. Taking the time resolution as its main line, the monograph teases out the development of cross-correlation SXRSC technology, from image converter SXRSC, plenoptic and solid-state SXRSC to two-color laser fields lonization SXRSC, aiming at guiding readers to clearly know the development of the high time-space resolution technology and meanwhile analyze the inheritance and surmounting of scientific intension and essence in each phase. The monograph is a major part of XIOPM’s planning and building the discipline of attosecond physical diagnosis and received supports from General /Major Program of NSFC, Preferential Selection of Scientific Activity for Personnel Studying Overseas and other research programs.

Dr. WANG Chao focuses on study of high temporal-spatial resolution photoelectric detection and functional metamaterial. He visited Department of Physics of Kansas State University in America from 2008 to 2010 as an exchange visitor, and carried out research collaboration in MPC-AS of POSTECH in the South Korea from 2014 to 2015, participating in the building of strong-field attosecond beam line and partial performance upgrading. So far, he has published 3 books including monographs and translations (including coauthored 1 Chinese and 1 English monograph and 1 Chinese translation), applied for more than 30 patents and published more than 40 academic papers.
