XIOPM Group Attend the 31st International Congress on High-Speed Imaging and Photonics

“The 31st International Congress on High-Speed Imaging and Photonics” was successfully held in Osaka, Japan on Nov. 6-11, 2016, and more than 200 experts, scholars and exhibitors from 14 countries such as the U.S., the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Russia, Australia, South Africa, Japan and China, etc. attended the Congress, including XIOPM’s 9-member delegation headed by director Zhao Wei.

The “International Congress on High-Speed Imaging and Photonics”, or “International Congress on High-Speed Photography and Photonics” as the former name, has been held once every two years since 1952 and generally in relevant countries with very high academic level in the discipline. XIOPM successfully held the 18th and the 27th International Congress on High-Speed Photography and Photonics in 1988 and 2006 respectively. The former name was changed to the “International Congress on High-Speed Imaging and Photonics” at the 28th session in 2008.

This session of congress lasted for five days and discussed topics and ranges of high-speed imaging sensor, camera and imaging system, high-speed X-ray, infrared, microwave and neutron imaging, plasma high-speed imaging diagnosis, high-speed image transducing and processing, high-voltage surge compression, fluid visualization, surge, ballistics, experimental mechanics, injection and combustion, bubble and drop, high-speed physics and chemistry, holographic high-speed imaging and high-speed bio-medical imaging application, etc. The Congress presented 44 invite lectures, 159 oral reports and 65 posters and was held in four branch halls at the same time.

XIOPM Research Fellow Yao Baoli delivered the invite report “Fast Structured Illumination Microscopy”, Associate Research Fellow Sheng Lizhi made the oral report “Research of Nested X-ray Concentrator for Future X-ray Timing Astronomy” and Research Fellow Zhang Wenfu and students Gao Guilong, Liang Lingliang and Xi Dandan gave 3-minute brief introduction to the posters respectively.

As entrusted by the Congress, Research Fellow Zhao Wei hosted the branch congress on “High-Speed Bio-medical Imaging” on the afternoon of Nov. 8, Research Fellow Yao Baoli hosted the branch congress on “High-Speed Bio-medical Imaging” on the morning of Nov. 9 and made the keynote speech at the congress discussion on the afternoon, and Associate Research Fellow Sheng Lizhi hosted the branch congress on “High-Speed X-ray, Infrared, Microwave and Neutron Imaging” on the afternoon of Nov.7.

This Congress arranged 3 awards, including the NAC High-Speed Imaging Award won by Professors Rihito Kuroda and Shigetoshi Sugawa from Tohoku University, Japan for the development of 20-million-piece high-sensitivity CMOS image sensor, the “Best Poster Award” won by the National University of Defense Technology and XIOPM for the paper Propagation of Ultrashort Light Pulse Through a AlGaAs/GaAs Multiple-prism Waveguide Deflecting Scanner for All Optical Solid State Streak Camera. In addition, the Congress specially set the creative “Slow Motion Award” for the public, which was granted to three photographers from Australia and Japan respectively.

After 5-day wide and deep exchanges, the Congress was completed successfully on the morning of Nov. 10. On the afternoon that same day, the representatives paid a visit to the inertia-confinement laser fusion device of the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University. During the Congress, the conference for national representatives was held according to the practice, which XIOPM Director Zhao Wei and Research Fellow Yao Baoli attended as the national representatives of China and members of the international committee. As the national representative of Russia Professor Schelev died on Sept. 5, 2016, the Congress Chairman, Professor Shiraga recalled Professor Schelev’s life and outstanding contributions in high-speed photography, and expressed mourning for and commemoration of him. After discussion, it was decided to hold “The 32st International Congress on High-Speed Imaging and Photonics” in the Netherlands in 2018.
